Bull Island Roasters

Bull Island Roasters was started in Poquoson, Virginia by Jay Bright in 2018.  After 37 years in retail sales, Jay retired from the work that he knew for the majority of his adult life.  Desiring to enrich his community with the experience of drinking fresh roasted coffee from around the world, Jay stepped out through faith to establish Bull Island Roasters.

Bull Island Roasters draws its name from the rich heritage of the Poquoson, Virginia area.  Jutting into the Chesapeake Bay between the Poquoson River and the Back River, Poquoson’s outline against the surrounding blue waters resembles the shape of a bull’s head.  Thus the term “Bull Islander” is affectionately reserved for the waterman and families that have inhabited this town for many generations.

As a Tidewater native, Jay made his home in Poquoson in 2014.  While Jay would never make the mistake of calling himself a Bull Islander, he proudly displays his business name as a reminder of the history and tradition that means so much to the people of this community.  Jay and his family proudly live, work, and worship in this historic American community.

Bull Island's Vision

Starting in late 2018, Jay established Bull Island Roasters to bring artisan crafted coffee to his community in Poquoson, Virginia.  For many generations, Bull Islanders have established familial identity based upon the craft of the waterman and the scientific expertise of the NASA community.  Jay joins his community by merging the craft of artesian coffee and the science of micro-roasting.

Bull Island Roasters imports coffee beans from around the world, giving each customer the experience of drinking only the best fair trade Arabica beans available today.

As a micro-roaster, Jay personally roasts these exotic strains in small batches to achieve the freshest, richest, and smoothest flavor profile.  Jay will custom roast each order tailored by customer preference so it’s always the freshest you can get!
